OMG this is astonishing! I can almost tell you what page in her BIO mentions this and/or performances like this . It's mighty historic and lovely. But Melanie--tell me where this was?

(Early live rarity from '67, obviously taped on someone's portable cassette recorder. Don't ask me how it survived or where it came from, but it sounds like a club, so it could be somewhere in Greenwich Village. Melanie asks for two one-dollar bills from the audience to do something to her guitar so it sounds like... well, you'll see! Someone is "playing" along on something percussive, and it's all a bit like a piece of crazy early rap! You'll need to listen very carefully and will have to put up with the crappy sound, but to aid you here's my transcript, from start to finish, with **** where I just can't make it out at all.)

Melanie: Umm, does somebody (laughs) have a dollar they can lend me to do the next song? I need two... (laughs) I'm an expensive act now, you've got to give me two! *****
Voice in audience: (I remember when you were only) a dollar....
Melanie: (laughs) He knew me when I was a dollar!
Peter: You got the money baby?
Melanie: Yeah, baby! *****
Isn't it a pity that I'm not the prettiest girl in the world
'cause sometimes I feel, when I kick up my heels in the sun,
I'm the loveliest one.
And isn't it a crime that there's nothing on my mind
worth a mention in a rhyme or a line of a play,
protesting the rise of conformity in mankind?
*** it a pity ***** the prettiest girl in the world.

Oh those womanly slobs that gather in mobs,
and drown in their coke,
and smother in smoke,
and (laugh?) in their beer,
and smear the name of their friends --
you know where they'll go in the end?
If it were up to me do you know where they'd dwell?
Hmmm?
In heaven!
It became a modern day hell.
Well...
Isn't it a pity that I'm not the prettiest girl in the world,
'cause sometimes I feel, when I kick up my heels in the sun,
I'm the loveliest one
.
"Tomorrow will be cancelled" --
I think that's what he said.
"All of you who live today,
tomorrow you'll be dead," he said.
Tomorrow will be cancelled?
I took this letter hard.
He signed it unpretentiously,
"Affectionately, God" (Grunt)
Oh you're one of my kind so I sure don't mind
if you laugh at my song 'cause ********
Oh there's nothing very wrong with me,
Can't you see
that I'm just a little bit crazy!?
Ah ha ha...
Oh isn't it a pity that I'm not the prettiest girl in the world,
'cause sometimes I feel when I kick up my heels in the sun,
I'm the loveliest one.
Yeah, I *******
Pieces of a career, scattered by the winds of experience and assembled again by the force of love into the most personal and
brilliant moments of her musical journey. Melanie is poised to enlighten new generations about what it means to sing with both passion and eloquence, to write at once with intelligence and emotion, and to inspire through song. Nobody does this better.
