From the albums SILENCE IS KING (1993) and FREEDOM KNOWS MY NAME (1993)
Estate sale today from one o'clock 'til four
You go and get ready, I'll go start the car
Better to be early then we'll be the first in line
And you know how I love this, it's amazing what you find
Going through dead people houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers, the trunks, the closets
Don't leave a corner un-inspected
You head for the kitchen, I'll check out upstairs
Old postcards and pens and blue fiesta ware
Shaving mugs and winged eyeglasses, giant plastic pins
Linen suits and flowered dresses, so glad we got in
Going through dead people houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers, the trunks, the closets
Don't leave a corner un-inspected
They just don't make 'em like this, it's an incredible price
We could hang it in the kitchen, he was just your size
It's a beautiful frame, the picture's alright
Salt and pepper airplanes, ooh, that deco light!
Going through dead people houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers, the trunks, the closets
Don't leave a corner un-inspected
Tonight we'll go home and sort through our array
we'll find the best spots to put things on display
you can't get this great stuff anymore, I don't know why
But I'll bet we make some young strangers happy when we die
Going through dead people houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers, the trunks, the closets
Don't leave a corner un-inspected
Going through dead people houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers, the trunks, the closets
Don't leave a corner un-inspected

SILENCE IS KING
Writers: Gary Burr and Jim Photoglo
Publishers: Afterberger Music (ASCAP)/Universal Music Corporation (ASCAP)/
W B Music Corp (ASCAP)
She tests every word like a fine wine
She holds every thought like her last dime
You could hear a pin drop from miles away
You could hear a heart stop as plain as day
We live in land where silence is king
whispers have all disappeared
Cry for an echo you won't hear a thing
Silence is king around here
Silence is king around here
Where are the dreams we were after
Where is the joy and the laughter
Were they only habits we were doomed to lose
Or is destiny not ours to choose
We live in world where silence is king
whispers have all disappeared
Cry for an echo you won't hear a thing
Silence is king around here
Silence is king around here
Desperate measures come from desperate times
I don't regret what I have done
If my actions make you speak your mind
Angry words are better than none
We live in world where silence is king
whispers have all disappeared
Cry for an echo you won't hear a thing
Silence is king around here
We live in land where silence is king
whispers have all disappeared
Cry for an echo you won't hear a thing
Silence is king around here
Silence is king around here

I WILL GET OVER (Rock In The Road)
Writers: Melanie Safka and David Brunoehler
There's a rock in the road and a ditch on the side
And a steep hill that must be climbed
It's a big heavy load and it measures too wide
And a destination that's hard to find
(Chorus: I WILL GET OVER)
But
I will get over
I'll make it there
There just no getting round it, this trouble I bear
I will get over, I'll make it there
'Till I climb up that mountain and breathe heaven's air
I will get over
(Chorus: ROCK IN THE ROAD)
But
I will get over
I'll make it there
'Till I climb up that mountain and breathe heaven's air
I will get over
There's a stop sign ahead and it's slippery when wet
And a detour at every turn
There's a narrowing bridge and a long threatening ridge
And a big-old landslide that bars return
(Chorus: I WILL GET OVER)
But
I will get over
I'll make it there
'Till I climb up that mountain and breathe heaven's air
I will get over
'Till that sweet day I find it and know that I'm there
I will get over
(Chorus: ROCK IN THE ROAD)
But
I will get over
I'll make it there
There's just no getting round it this trouble I bear
I will get over
There's a wreck on the right and it's getting on night
And my headlights, they won't turn on
All the brakes have been worn
And the bumper's been torn
And my pride and patience are all but gone
(Chorus: I WILL GET OVER)
But
I will get over
I'll make it there
'Till I climb up that mountain and breathe heaven's air
I will get over
I'll make it there
'Till I climb up that mountain and breathe heaven's air, ooh
I'm gonna make it
I will get over
(Chorus: ROCK IN THE ROAD)
But
I will get over
I'll make it there
'Till that sweet day I find it and know that I'm there
I will get over
I will get over

(IN MY) ROCK AND ROLL HEART
Writer: Melanie Safka
Who do I Love?
And what makes that true?
Who do I speak to when I speak to you?
Are you my love or are you my friend?
Trust your own perception
It's a loaded question
You've given me love
Give me a reason to be your friend
I am a woman
Could've done better as a man
Ah look at me now
Too many one love stands
They come to play
On my rock and roll heart
They come to play
On my rock and roll heart
Oo ooo, rock and roll heart
Ooo ooo, rock and roll heart
I'm shrouded in mystery
And I'm covered in light
Standing like stone
Even though we're together
I'll always be alone
And caught in these lines
That catch the tears on my face
Aging with grace
In my rock and roll heart
Aging with grace
In my rock and roll heart
Oo ooo, rock and roll heart
Ooo ooo, rock and roll heart
You take your children to school
And you go down the grocery store
You pass as a grown up
In this left (right) brain grown up world
And if they ask you for proof
They're gonna find out right away
You just came to play
With your rock and roll heart
You're just here to play
With your rock and roll heart
Oo ooo, rock and roll heart
Ooo ooo, rock and roll heart
Well I'm taking the stage
Reflecting the light
Inventing the role
My body's dancing out
A storm in my soul
And there is no rest
But I can't put it on hold
Cause time's just a beat
In my rock and roll heart
Time's just a - uh
In my rock and roll heart
Time's just a - uh
In my rock and roll heart
Ooo oo, rock and roll heart
Ooo ooo, rock and roll heart
Rock and roll heart
(repeat and fade)

HARD RAIN
(A HARD RAIN'S A-GONNA FALL)
Written by Bob Dylan
Copyright © 1963 by Warner Bros. Inc.; renewed 1991 by Special Rider Music
Where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's gonna fall
Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin'
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin'
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
Heard one person starve,
I heard ten people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, hard
And it's a hard rain's gonna fall.
(Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded with hatred
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's gonna fall)
Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin'
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my song well before I start singin'
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's gonna fall

GONE WITH THE WIND
Writers: Melanie Safka and David Brunoehler
I was something of a wild child
I was some kind of lady
Stranded without title
And a little bit crazy
People I loved, they all drifted away
Paid no attention when I'd hear them say
Oh she's gone, gone with the wind
Gone, gone with the wind
I never took a rap for the original sin
And I'm gone with the wind
Then I hit the big time
In and out of trouble
Kept myself from drownin'
With the air inside my bubble
Soon as I'd land I'd quickly fly away
Never looked back when I'd hear someone say
Oh she's gone with the wind
Gone with the wind
Never took a rap for the original sin
And I'm gone with the wind
Set my own example
Did a lot of learning
Double burning candle and the
Fire's still burning
Reckless abandon and letting it show
Keep holding on while I lived to let go
Cause I'm gone with the wind
Gone, gone with the wind
I never took a rap for the original sin
And I'm gone with the wind
Gone, gone with the wind
Never took a rap for the original sin
And I'm gone with the wind

FALLEN ANGEL
Writers: Melanie Safka and David Brunoehler
He never had wings, never could fly
In most folks book he's a regular guy
Gets into trouble every now and then
But he always come round so I take him back in
He's a fallen angel
Been flyin' low for a mighty long time
Fallen angel
Heaven knows why, but he's mine
Some guys are harder to handle than others
Some men never come down
My guys a little bit different from his brothers
But he's always comin' around
He's a fallen angel
Love him to death - heaven knows why
Fallen angel
Heaven knows why, but he's mine
Fallin'
Headin' for under
Fallin'
Lighting and thunder
Callin' for help from a wishing well
Crawlin' for cover 'til I break the spell
(Fallen angel
Fallen angel
Fallen angel)
Most men rely on a certain set of morals
Some have a principle code
Mine can't exactly rest his laurels
But carries his own load
He's a fallen angel
Been flyin' low for a mighty long time
Fallen angel
Heaven knows why, but he's mine
Fallen angel
Love him to death - heaven knows why
Fallen angel
Heaven knows why, but he's mine
Fallen angel
Ooh, oh, heaven knows why
Fallen angel
Ooh he's mine

DETROIT OR BUFFALO
Writer: Barbara Keith
Publishers: EMI Feist Catalog Inc(ASCAP)/EMI Robbins Catalog Inc (ASCAP)
People expect you to fall
Hit that same old wall
Really they don't wanna help at all
They talk behind your back today
They shake their heads and say
Gee I always knew that the girl would come to no good anyway
God knows everybody's gotta go sometime
And I'm taking the train to the end of the line, yeah
Missin' that boy a mile at a time
I haven't been too well myself
Too much time upon the shelf
Sayin' that I don't need help when I do, I do
Still I think I'm gonna be just fine
A lot of friends a little wine
Still I'm wishing I could see you again sometime
Gonna pack my bags and go to Detroit or Buffalo
And if anybody wants to know where, you don't know, you don't know
God knows everybody's gotta go sometime
And I'm taking the train to the end of the line, yeah
Missing that boy a mile at a time
It's hard to open up that door
Like you've done so many times before
Sometimes you think you just can't do this anymore
Then you take a chance and take a train
Out into the pouring rain
When all you got there is your suitcase full of pain
Gonna pack my bags and go Detroit or Buffalo
And if anybody wants to know where, you don't know, you don't know
God knows everybody's gotta go sometime
And I'm taking the train to the end of the line, yeah
Missing that boy a mile at a time

ARROW
Writer: Cheryl Wheeler
Publishers: Penrod & Higgins (ASCAP)/Amachrist Music (ASCAP)
I wish I could fall in love
But it only leads to trouble, oh I know it does
Still I'd fool myself and gladly, just to feel I was
In love, in love
I wish I could feel my heartbeat rise
And gaze into some gentle, warm, excited eyes
And give myself as truly as an arrow flies
In windless skies
But I remember you in the TV light
Holding you close to me where we lay
And now I wish I knew some of those softer nights
Whisperin' quietly, feeling you turn to me
Only last night in a winter dark
I dreamed of how you loved in all your innocence
And I never knew a softer, warmer feeling since
Or a truer heart
Maybe these dreams are leading me
Maybe love is not as gentle as my memory
Maybe time and half-remembered fantasy
Are the greatest part
I remember you in the TV light
Holding you close to me where we lay
And now I wish I knew some of those softer nights
Whisperin' quietly, feelin' you turn to me
Wish I could feel my heartbeat rise
And gaze into some gentle, warm, excited eyes
And give myself as truly as an arrow flies
In windless skies
I wish I could fall in love
Though it only leads to trouble, oh I know it does
Still I'd fool myself and gladly, just to feel I was
In love, in love
I wish I could fall in love

FREEDOM KNOWS MY NAME
Writer: Melanie Safka with additional lyrics by Jess Leary
Freedom pulls my heartstrings
As I board another plane
It's not leaving I am wanting
But freedom knows my name
Friends turn into strangers
Strangers can be cold
I've been blessed with angels
At least I'm not alone
And they come to me in a sunrise
In the words of some old song
In the name of all creation
In a life long out of bounds
Freedom knows my name
Freedom knows my name
Tender roots grow deep with longing
To the core of solid ground
Mine go left of center
And slightly off the ground
Through the war torn ages
Scenes of freedom's fight
Drawn on hidden pages
Haunt our dreams at night
Freedom knows my name
Freedom knows my name
To the child without a promise
To the frightened and the tame
Although it's just a whisper
Freedom knows your name

PURPLE HAZE
Writer: Jimi Hendrix
Publishers: Experience Hendrix LLC (ASCAP)
Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things don't seem the same
I'm acting funny
And I don't know why
Excuse me while I kiss the sky
Kiss the sky . . .
Purple haze coming all around
Don't know if I'm going up or down
Am I happy or in misery
Whatever it is it put a spell on me
Help me, help me . . .
Purple haze all in my eyes
Don't know if it's day or night
You got me running
You blow my mind
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time
Help me, help me . . .
Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things don't seem the same
I'm acting funny
And I don't know why
Excuse me while I kiss the sky
Kiss the sky . . .
Excuse me while I kiss the sky

LIVE COAL
Writer: Melanie Safka
When I was young I broke every rule
'Cause the were made for the criminal and the fool, oh
I wasn't one of those
I had some wild oats to sow
I was a live coal
Don't kill the live coal
Hey now, seems like everywhere I go
Some joker is trying to kill the live coal
Oh, don't be one of those
I have some wild oats to sow
I am a live, alive'o
Oh baby, don't kill the live coal
I said, oh, oh, oh, don't kill the live coal
I said oh, oh. Oh, don't be one of those
Oh baby, don't kill the live coal
I said don't kill it, don't kill it
Don't kill the live coal
Don't kill it, don't kill it
Don't kill the live coal
New ones, old ones, I've seen 'em blow
Fan the embers watch the lives ones glow
We've such a long way to go
So from the heart of my soul
Don't kill the love coal
Oh no, don't kill the live coal
I said, oh, oh, oh don't be one of those, oh no
I said oh, oh, oh, don't kill the live coal
I said don't kill it, don't kill it
Don't kill the live coal
Don't kill it, don't kill it
Don't kill the live coal
Oh, oh, oh, don't be one of those
Oh, oh, oh, don't be one of those
When I was young I broke every rule
'Cause the were made for the criminal and the fool
Oh no, I wasn't one of those
I had some wild oats to sow
I am alive alive'o
Oh yeah, oh baby, don't kill the live coal, oh no
I say, oh, oh, oh, don't kill the live coal
I say, oh, oh, oh, don't kill the live coal
I said don't kill it, don't kill it
Don't kill the live coal
Don't kill it, don't kill it
Don't kill the live coal
Oh, oh, oh, don't be one of those, oh no

LIFE WILL NOT GO AWAY
Writers: Melanie Safka and David Brunoehler
The other night I dream I died
Close friends mourned and loved one cried
I wanted to shout down from my dream and say
Life will not go away
You can die in battle, you can die in sleep
Even though you lose most everything
There's always something you will keep
You can take my body but I will not die
Life will not go away
Li di di di di . . .
Life will not go way
You can't take it with you but there is this little part
That goes and continues in the realm of the heart
So rejoice in living and let the music play
Life will not go away
Well you won't take baggage when your time has come
Dreams go with you and deeds will be undone
So remember every promise and don't be lead astray
Life will not go away
Li di di di di . . .
Life will not go away
I will leave the planet quieter than it was yesterday
Life will not go away
Li di di di di . . .
Life will not go away
Well you won't take baggage when your time has come
Dreams go with you and deeds will be undone
So remember every promise and don't be lead astray
I will leave the planet quieter than it was yesterday
Life will not go away

TONIGHT'S THE KIND OF NIGHT
Writer: Melanie Safka
Tonight's the kind of night
Where all things come together
Tonight's the kind of night
Where nothing need be said
Tonight's the kind of night
Where all the lamps are burning
And nobody wants to go to bed
Some will have crackers and
Some will have pudding
Soup and crispies and home made bread
And no one will go hungry
And lovers will be faithful
We'll sip a little cup and
Then we'll sip another and we'll sing
Come all ye faithful tonight, sing out
Merry Christmas, oh yeah!
Ave Maria we'll try, one more time
Merry Christmas
Mommy's and Daddy's are loving all their children
And from a distant room
We can hear then giggling
One of them is dreaming
The world a little brighter
And everyone is listening
To the song in their head, and they sing
Come all ye faithful tonight, sing out
Merry Christmas, oh yeah!
Ave Maria we'll try, one more time
Merry Christmas
Tonight's the kind of night
The world won't hold us down here
From planet to planet
From star to star
We'll shire our little light
That everyone can follow
Tonight's the kind of night
Where all the lamps are burning
And no one will go hungry
And lovers will be faithful
Tonight's the kind of night
Where all things come together
Tonight I make a promise
That I will sing forever
Tonight the kisses fly from all out little fingers
And nobody wants to go to bed
Come all ye faithful tonight, sing out
Merry Christmas, oh yeah!
Ave Maria we'll try, one more time
Merry Christmas
Come all ye faithful tonight, sing out
Merry Christmas, oh yeah!
Ave Maria we'll try, one more time
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
